The ‘salty or sweet’ dilemma isn’t just reserved for snacks. We get a lot a questions regarding whether salt or sugar makes for a better scrub. We think both salt and sugar scrubs are great and that they both provide great benefits for healthy skin. Which scrub is best for you, sugar or salt, will depend on a host of factors including:  your mood, skin sensitivities, skin conditions, why you’re using a scrub, and your goal results. By Justine has a variety of both sugar and salt scrubs. Keep reading for a quick guide on what you need to know about the differences between salt and sugar based scrubs & for information about the sugar and salt based scrubs we have available at By Justine.

Salt Scrubs

  • Exfoliation: Sea salt granules are sharp and tend to be more abrasive than sugar granules. These sharper granules are great for providing a deep exfoliation that softens tough or callused skin. We recommend using sea salt scrubs on common rough, dry, or callused areas over the body such as your feet, legs, arms, and hands. For added strength on your feet or other callused area, use in combination with a pumice stone. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test of the sea salt on each area of your body prior to use. Also, if you have irritated skin as a result of eczema and acne,  it is recommended that you use a more gentle exfoliant such as a sugar based scrub on your face--- as the skin on your face is more sensitive than on your body.

  • Therapeutic Power: Sea salt is packed with  minerals such as magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium which aid in enhancing the appearance of healthy skin. These minerals help to prevent skin dryness, dullness, and irritation.  Both sea salt and Epsom Salt (magnesium) act as an anti-inflammatory for sore muscles as well as irritated skin, helping to reduce muscle tension, reduce redness, and relieve skin inflammation. For the best therapeutic results, take your time and thoroughly apply the salt based scrub (for 3-5 minutes) --- allowing it to seep into your skin.

  • Anti-Aging:  Sea salt boasts many anti-aging benefits including fading of stretch marks, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, reduction of the appearance of cellulite, increased lymphatic flow, and increased skin cell regeneration. Regular use (1-2) times per week is recommended to achieve the best results-- for glowing, soft, and youthful appearing skin.

  • Detox:Sea salt draws toxins from out of the body and on the skin, including bacteria that causes acne and eczema. The minerals in sea salt help to open up pores, allowing for a deep cleanse and creating room to lock in moisture. In addition, the anti-microbial properties found in Epsom Salt (magnesium) also helps to fight bacteria that causes eczema and acne by drawing out the toxins and working to reduce skin inflammation.

Our Molten Lava Scrub is the ultimate exfoliator boasting benefits from Dead Sea Salt, Epsom Salt, Black Lava Hawaiian Sea Salt, and Kosher Salt.  This impressive variety of minerals works to scrub off dry skin and leave you rejuvenated.  The purification properties of dead sea salt and epsom salt can also be found in our Live Love Lemongrass Scrub, Lemonade on the Rocks Scrub, Eucalyptus Awakening,  and Crushed Pink Lavender Scrub (which also features Pink Himalayan Sea Salt).

Sugar Scrubs

  • Exfoliation:  Raw sugar granules are more round and smaller than salt granules, making for a smoother, softer, and gentler exfoliation. Sugar scrubs can be used all over the face and body. Sugar scrubs help to gently remove sebum and debris build up aiding in skin regeneration and the production of bright smooth skin. Sugar particles dissolve quickly into the skin creating a polished feel. We recommend using sugar scrubs  in areas where you experience sensitive skin, or heightened acne and eczema flare-ups, such as your face, lips, arms, neck, and back. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test of the sugar scrub on each area of your body prior to use.

  • Moisturizer: Sugar is a natural humectant. A humectant is a substance used to preserve or retain moisture. Sugar scrubs are great at adding and retaining moisture to dry and dull skin, helping to brighten your skin’s appearance and enable its natural glow.

  • Glycolic Acid Treatment: Glycolic acid is a compound that easily penetrates deep into the skin, breaking down and removing sebum build up, debris, and dead skin cells. The result is even, toned, exfoliated, and brighter skin. Glycolic acid occurs naturally in organic and natural sugar cane, making sugar scrubs that use natural or organic sugar an effective treatment for acne, eczema, and inflamed skin.

  • Detox: The minerals and glycolic acid found in natural and organic sugar cane help to penetrate your pores and remove toxins, while also creating a protective barrier on the skin to prevent future toxins from entering.
